When I began this series, I called it In Detail Wednesday, but life happens (we inherited 4 baby kittens that we are hand feeding) & Wednesday no longer work to get this series out. So it is now going to be just the In Detail series & I will post it as often as possible.
(This post has been languishing in my queue for months, unfinished, so I finally got a chance to finish it.)
Today I would like to talk about a somewhat controversial item. Controversial in that not everyone agrees on its truly intended use & what it should be called.
Below are some quotes from Sense & Sensibility patterns old forum:
"I remember that some time ago there was a discussion about "jumper"-dresses of the regency era.
But there were no real evidence for the existence of such dresses.
Sometime ago I got copies of fashionplates from a friend.
And here you can see such a dress!
They are from 1802 (an 10 = year 10 of the revolution)
The lady in the middle deffinitely wears such a dress, it is discribed as a "Fichu-Guimpe"
The lady on the left might wear something like that too, as her sleeves are white and you can see a white boader at her neckline.
The dress on the left looks rather that the "sweater" is sewn in."
(edit:oops, I mixed up the words "jumper" and "sweater")

Here are several films screencaps that show Regency "jumpers".

"As far as I can remember, I have seen one "jumper" in nearly 40 years of costuming - and that was almost "fancy dress" worn by the then Princess of Wales in the 1810's - I think.

It is not something that is often seen on fashion plates, again as far as I can remember - the chemisette under a dress look tends to have long sleeves. However, I would be delighted to be told differently - I have always felt it was a designer fancy."
"Yes, jumpers were worn in the Regency era. In the online Regency costume class I took last year (which Jenny Chancey taught) she posted some pictures from a book from that era, in which a girl had drawn pictures of every day life... people taking a walk, doing this and that around the house, etc., and in a lot of the pictures they are wearing jumpers like Mary Bennett's or Emma's. I wish I could find the pictures but I can't get onto the page with that class anymore. Maybe someone out there saved the picture??"
"The book is called "Mrs. Hurst Dancing" by Diana Sperling. This is not "fashionable dress, but everyday, I think, which is why it wouldn't be in fashion plates, or in museum collections. I confess I had forgotten the book.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/customer-media/customer-gallery/A1G17R47N2...
I think Jessamine's Regency Page has pictures too."
"I have actually seen plates of jumpers over blouses from this era. I will have to check through my books to see if I can find them. The jumper seemed to be a short-lived holdover from the middle Regency period (like the ones you see in the watercolor paintings from Mrs. Hurst Dancing). Molly's jumpers with their plain (rather than very full) skirts would have fit into the mid-to-late 1820s but probably no later--especially when all the frills and furbelows of the 1830s hit. "
"A jumper is a pullover, a woolie or a sweater. A pinafore is an apron! A pinafore dress is what you calll a jumper! So, once again, two countries separated by the same language!"
What ever term is used, in my opinion, it is a useful addition to any wardrobe, whether it be for historic reenactments or incorporating it into an everyday wardrobe, a jumper is an almost essential part of my closet. I have at least 5 in my rotation of clothes for the seasons. A jumper can make a smaller selection of pieces, seem like so much more.

Actually, the photos of the Regency style jumper I have listed in my shops is one I wear for fall, winter, & early spring since it is so versatile. I made it from a Midnight Navy medium weight wool suiting that I washed, which gives a very nice, slightly felted hand to the wool & makes for an even more water repellant fabric, which has been a great asset in this extremely snow- bound winter.

The Empire bodice is fitted with darts in front & a series of small gathers to give shape to the bust. The back of the bodice is made up of curved pieces for that fashionably shaped back.
A square neckline with curved edges in front is a great feature that can highlight intricate details of a blouse or chemisette. The back of the neckline is a wide high curve, beneath which the back closes with five buttons, four on the bodice & hidden in the folds of the skirt.

The skirt hangs smooth in the front, but in back I have added deep pleats for a nice fullness. I like to put in a deep hem, usually 4"-6", in most of my skirts, dresses, & jumpers, just in case I decide I would like to lower the hem at a later date.
I know it takes longer, but I often hand sew my hems, using a hem or prick stitch. It is a historically accurate technique for most hems & I find it to be relaxing too. I use this same technique for the hems on pants, like my War of 1812 trousers & I even use it to finish the inside seams on the British & Regimental Revolutionary War coats to create a beautiful, longer lasting interior.
So whether you wear jumpers for living history or add them in for everyday, they are wonderful for mixing & matching.
I hope you have a lovely belated Wednesday,
Sarah Grace
P.S. I nearly forgot. Jumpers are also fabulous for maternity wear!
P.P.S. I apologize for the lack of photos. Some of them just didn't work.

I will be posting every Wednesday or every other Wednesday, a new post series called In Detail Wednesday, where I will choose an item from my shop to go "in detail" with photos, descriptions, etc. to not only spread the word about some of the items I have listed in my Etsy & Zibbet shops, Lady Of Grace Designs, but also to help me document my creations.

For the first post in this series, I would like to go over one of my newest listings, the Revolutionary War British Coat.
The coat is made from my own pattern, which I drafted from studying originals & paintings from the period. I had opportunity recently to create a British Coat for a little boy. It required decreasing the size of my first pattern & making a couple mockups, but I enjoy a challenge(thus part of the reason I sew!). I keep my mockups though, to use for any future orders in that size, marking measurements on it to save me time later.

When I first began making these coats, I crafted them from a somewhat lighter medium weight wool, but it just didn't have the feel & weight that I had seen in other coats. About the same time, a wonderful friend, who happens to be a fount of wisdom, Sue, told me that I could, ...wait for it... WASH wool!(I can just imagine your looks of shock & horror at such a proposition). I will do a detailed post on the method & the tricks to getting it right. For now, I will just tell you that the trick works.
Unfortunately, my supplier of that first wool has recently chosen to discontinue their line of wools, so I began a diligent search for a new source. By the blessings of God, I found an invaluable supplier of exceptionally high quality Melton wool broadcloth. This wool is the closest approximation of the original wool used in period examples that I have found & the colors are magnificent.
The coat is machine stitched on most of the seams, but I like the finished look of s hand stitched lining, inside shoulder, armscyes, & center back seams. I use a prick stitch, which is the stitch I employ for most of my items hems.
I do faux welts for the insides of the pockets, as I like the look & have found a few examples with the same effect.

Coats from the War had a few types of buttons, made from different materials. Pewter buttons pop up quite often, so when I came across a man who handcrafts in small batches period correct replicas at a great price, I knew the buttons would be an addition that would really set off the coat. 38 of these beauties are sewn on to the front facings, cuffs, & pockets.
The front of the coat fastens with 3 large hook & eyes, when the buttons on the front facings aren't being used.

The skirt portion of the coat fastens on either side with small hook & eye sets, which reveals the natural white lining & the blue hearts. An interesting feature of these coats are the pairs of hearts on either side of the skirt. I have yet to find the reason for these, but it reminds me of the old saying "wearing your heart on your sleeve". I wonder if it got it's start with these hearts.
I applique stitch mine by hand, giving them a nice finishing touch.

So for now, that is my first post in the In Detail Wednesday Series. I hope you enjoyed it & it was informative.

All of the bags are reversible, washable, & stuffable with all of your favorite things. These are more than just purses, these are multi-purpose bags, a great way to extend the life of a bag, so that when it no longer suits one function such as a purse, it can be a beach bag, a tote for going to the library, a crafting bag for those of us who like to take our current projects with us, even as a diaper bag for the moms & grandmas out there.

I have had an Etsy account www.ladyofgracedesigns.etsy.com for almost a year now, but have never blogged about it. The shop will be getting many new items soon, but for now there are only a handful. It is my goal to reach 50 items within the next several months, but life does tend to interrupt my plans.
I have been working on Revolutionary War & War of 1812 items along with my preparations for the Ottawa First Fridays. My store room will soon (I pray) be filled with a plethora of purses, scarves, ties, fabric jewelry, baby items, sun dresses, & far too many other things to list.
I hope everyone has a wonderful week & God bless,

I simply love farmer's markets for the wonderful produce, homemade baked goods, & jams & preserves that I can find for a fraction of the store cost. And it was grown local. So when I found that a nearby town would be having a farmer's market that welcomes anyone selling produce or handmade items, I was thrilled.
Ottawa, Ohio will be hosting First Fridays, a farmer's market with added attractions for all ages, on June 7th, August 2nd, September 6th, & October 4th. If you are in the area, come out & take a look at all the beautiful & tasty things to buy

If you, like me would like a chance to win such perfect shoes, head over to http://www.americanduchess.blogspot.com for an opportunity at these wardrobe must haves (though I wouldn't mind winning them myself!).
God bless,

My grandfather was in the hospital for a couple weeks from gall bladder surgery & when he did finally come home, my mother & I took turns staying with him. He is now back on his feet & capable of doing most things by himself. Besides everything that is going on with my grandfather, I am in the process of starting up my own sewing business. As my first venture into the world of sales, I am tackling a three day bicentennial reenactment, where the expected crowds could reach upwards of 2,000. Please pray for me that I will be able to complete everything on time & without going bonckers. Needless to say, life has been quite frazzled & confused. So, without further ado, here is the second half of True Blue.

As I simply adore L.M. Montgomery's creations, I had to take part. I have never answered tag questions before, but thought for Anne I would give it a go.

1. How many of the Anne books have you read, and how many of the films have you seen?

I have read all eight of the books in the Anne series, as well as Chronicles of Avonlea (if you like the Anne series, you would love Chronicles of Avonlea). I have seen all three of the films. Although the third is not my favorite, it still has wonderful costumes & some very fine performances.

2. If someone yanked your hair and called you carrots, what would you do to him?

Depending entirely upon my mood, I might give him a sound tongue lashing, or if I were having a simply Jonah day, I may well follow Anne's example & smash a decidedly none too comforting slate across his crown.

3. What would you do if Josie Pye dared you to walk the ridgepole of a roof?

I agree completely with Miss Marilla Cuthbert upon this matter. Let Miss Pye turn blue with her daring.

4. If you had the opportunity to play any AGG (I'm abbreviating from now on because I am a lazy typist) character in an AGG play, which role would you choose?

I would choose between Miss Muriel Stacy & Miss Marilla Cuthbert. I believe that I contain several of their character traits.

5. If you were marooned on a desert island, which AGG character would you want to have as a companion? (Anne, Gilbert and Diana are not options. Let's keep this thing interesting. Not that they're not interesting.... oh, yay, now the disclaimer to this question is longer than the question itself. Lovely lovely lovely.)

Miss Muriel Stacy, for she would be practical when need be, but could sympathize when one is in THE DEPTHS OF DESPAIR!!!

6. If there was going to be a new adaptation of the Anne books and you could have any part in making the movie, what would you choose to do? (screenwriting, acting, casting, costume-making are a few possibilities)

(Raises both hands & jumps up & down in anticipation) THE COSTUME-MAKING!!! I am a seamstress & I think the costumes of the AoGG films, as well as the Road to Avonlea series are simply delicious ("You speak as if it were something to eat").

7. What are, in your opinion, the funniest AGG book/movie scenes? (choose one from the books and one from the movies)

There are almost too many to choose, but one that I always enjoy is the scene in Anne of the Island, when Anne & her three chums, are entertaining callers at the boardinghouse & there are sooo many cushions & pillows about that one cannot even go up the stairs without tripping over one. The scene in the film where Anne declares "Don't eat it Miss Stacy" & "I suppose it was a romantic way to perish for a mouse" are simply marvelous in their hilarity.

8. What are, in your opinion, the saddest AGG book/movie scenes? (choose one of each again)

I find quite a few of the scenes to be sad, but when Anne turns Gilbert down after the clambake, it always makes me tear up. Also when Anne is crying alone in her misery over Matthew's death & Marilla comes to comfort her. In the book I can never help but cry when Anne loses her baby Joyce. It is so sad.

9. Which AGG character would you most like to spend an afternoon with? (again, Anne and Gilbert and Diana are not options for this one--think secondary characters)

Miss Lavendar Lewis, she reminds me so much of Anne that it would be almost as nice as spending the day with her. Or Miss Rachael Lynde to catch up on all the old news.

10. What is your definition of a kindred spirit?

Someone who shares your faith in Jesus Christ. One with whom you need not speak to communicate. Whose morals & ideals are alike in most respects. Though you may be apart you are separated, because true friends are always together in spirit.

God bless,
Sarah GraceSarah Gracehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11528995017267283342noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2921676772518772918.post-58095431971603038312012-03-02T10:00:00.000-08:002012-03-02T10:00:07.888-08:00Happy Birthday Theodor Geisel aka Dr. Seuss<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 301px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiPMh4Vte7kLo8sRMd3dnGwOKxaq9zEFktb0kynN1OYlOFX8l5p8wpchKxLhrBPMaDzTYhpYB1Ag9MMYlfzyh-Zjnr6MaybORZIQni8sfadvXusWotV8fow3QasD78ATEBW4FFAEgiv5a8/s320/564px-Ted_Geisel_NYWTS_2_crop.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5714696274805753586" />

Born 105 years ago, March 2nd, 1907, Theodor Seuss Geisel came into this world. His imagination is one I long to have. He may have been unusual to some in his mind's wonderings, but what an amazing gift that God gave him, to write for & capture the imaginings of children everywhere. Though he didn't stop at writing, he illustrated with such panache that you are inherently drawn into his world. He used those skills to create political cartoons for WWII & advertisements for companies such as Flit & Standard Oil.
I began reading Dr. Seuss books when I was about 8, but even at my advanced age of 23 :), I still enjoy poring over his tongue twisting phrases that tickle your brain.
The world would not have been the same for me without Green Eggs & Ham or The Cat in the Hat.
What are your favorite Seuss books?
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhznfD9EYpaLVQulBS7VvY-Tq5Kt2s0AYsKgjp4XpFGVcIV6qo_WBakJwBNw5AMXP-KBl5Q3ybR-O8eEgkD8IhmCs1ViFsKsyiYeeBFVDfbUqM3fPhXdxXni9bthiEqcipanqk3aUf5Uds/s320/untitled.bmp" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5714696990425338514" />

So Happy 105th Birthday Dr. Seuss!
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 188px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhZbZimAbNoBuMA7ts-gmwoEX6q_o7twKISbOMpBfw9PGxj5yzjbr3GRVLQ-CP50GUYAVp-GdoPkskM59Fao-oDTdBu093GqZ22OwjZS50AOLHzk2N6QsWbpuh4bgQeN1jorKdWW_DWPAI/s320/f293ce45904649d2092431e393834377.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5714696449692198018" />

God bless,
Sarah Grace

P.S. I spent several hours writing a short story for the blog Inkpen Authoress' contest Heigh-Ho for a Husband. I only heard about it today & just barely made the deadline. Below is the story if you wish to read it.

MR. COLLINS UNREQUITED LOVE:

Mr. Collins stood in stunned amazement as Miss Elizabeth Bennet proceeded to remove herself from his presence, closing the door on his proclamations of love. He could not fathom that she would be so insensible to the advantages of a match with one whom had the favor of Lady Catherine de Bourgh.
A quizzical expression crossed his comical features. He could not return to Hunsford & face Lady Catherine's scathing displeasure for failing to secure a suitable wife. He was willing to concede that Couisin Elizabeth might well be too strong-willed for Lady Catherine's approval. Perhaps, he thought, one of his other couisins would be more to Lady Catherine's liking. He began going over the Bennet sisters, trying to gauge which would be acceptable to Lady Catherine & her requiem.
Tittering laughter broke into Mr. Collins thoughts. He knew that likely it was the laughter of his couisins, Catherine & Lydia. He began to contemplate Couisin Lydia, who was more pleasing to the eye than her elder sister, Catherine. Couisin Lydia, he reflected, sadly is too fickle & not easily led. Lady Catherine would not be amused by Couisin Lydia's inappropriate outbursts & reckless behavior.
Couisin Catherine, while nearly as fickle as Couisin Lydia, could if given into Lady Catherine's capable hands, be molded into an amiable, demure wife, one whom, Lady Catherine would be pleased to give her condecension.
"Yes," Mr.Collins said aloud, to no one in particular, "I shall address my attentions to Couisin Catherine." Having resolved to a course of action, Mr. Collins began to prepare & rehearse his decrees of ardent admiration, as well as those of his future bride. For Mr. Collins was assured that Couisin Catherine would not be so insensible as Couisin Elizabeth. When he had commited to memory his speech of affection, he betook himself to find Mrs. Bennet, that he might be granted an audience with Couisin Catherine.

Mr. Collins did not need to search far. Mrs. Bennet burst forth from Mr. Bennet's study, a look of exceeding consternation written upon her brow. A facade of apologetic sympathy rushed over her features as she spied Mr. Collins coming towards her.
"Oh, Mr. Collins, I do wish to deeply apologize for the behavior of my foolish daughter." Mrs. Bennet barely paused for breath before opening her mouth to continue.
Mr. Collins raised his hand with an attempt at a smile, though twas more like unto a sneer. "My dear Madam, do not fret yourself. I desire an audience with your daughter, Catherine, if I may be so forthright." The sardonic smile remained throughout his pallid plea.
"Oh, Mr. Collins, Oh! I will fetch Kitty straightway." Mrs. Bennet said with hardly concealed glee, as she rushed about, calling in an ear-splitting cord, "Kitty! Kitty! Kitteee! Where are you child?!"

"What is it, Mama?", came back from the vicinity of Kitty & Lydia's bed chamber.

Mrs. Bennet's day cap bobbed up & down as she took the steps as rapidly, as her age & less than lithe figure, would allow.
"Kitty, Mr. Collins wishes to speak with you. Your sister has been foolish & refused him. Go down, be considerate of my nerves, & accept him."

"But Mama-"

"Do not cross me on this Kitty! Do as I say & go!" With this Mrs. Bennet half pushed, half dragged Kitty down to the parlour.
Mr. Collins looked up, the leering, sneering smile of condecension permeating his entire being. With one final push & a look of threatening, Mrs. Bennet withdrew, closing the door behind her. Being Mrs. Bennet & also wishing to ascertain that Kitty received Mr. Collins with favor, she pressed her ear to the solid oak plank door, straining to hear & not be heard.
Kitty watched her mother leave with a sense of trepidition & uncertainty. The sensation of needing to cough came so forcibly over her, that she could not suppress it.
Mr. Collins stepped closer.
Another cough.
"My dear Couisin Catherine, I wish to request the honor of your hand."
Two consecutive coughs.
Mr. Collins tried to recall where he was in his speech. "I am...assured that you will be sensible to the immense advantage that of a connection, that would bring you into the presence of Lady Catherine de Bourgh."
Cough, cough.
An expression of irritation briefly crossed Mr. Collins face, but the patronizing sneer triumphed. "My dear Couisin Catherine, your discomfiture must be the result of your awe of Lady Catherine & the magnitude of her position."
Cough.
" Do not disquiet yourself on this matter. You are just of the sort that Lady Catherine.."
Cough.
" shall approve."
Cough, cough.
Then, sounding harshly & brisquely through the door, the voice of Mrs. Bennet resounded, "Kitty! Kitty! Cease that infernal coughing. Take into account my poor nerves!"
Coughing proceeded for several seconds.
A look of complete exasperation took up residence upon Mr. Collins face. "Obviously, my attentions are not as welcome as I had perceived they would be."
Mr. Collins marched to the door & ignoring Mrs. Bennet's pleas to reconsider, he retired to his quarters.
Meanwhile Mrs. Bennet burst into a symphony of wailings & a fountain of tears.
Kitty ran to be consoled by Lydia, coughing all the while.
Amongst all the mayhem, Miss Charlotte Lucas entered. Thus with her entrance, so ends our tale of tragic unrequited love.

By Sarah Grace

God bless to everyone,
Sarah GraceSarah Gracehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11528995017267283342noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2921676772518772918.post-10815064250699922002012-02-07T12:16:00.000-08:002012-02-07T13:45:22.900-08:00Happy Birthday Charles Dickens Unscramble Game<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 231px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhFBKx8BQQ023Lv3QCrJv2ocws519ypHxFXr6DZwhQ-UlE_mKw-sFKMcodFD6wBIsO6gH6jxKku6JjsBbBSQkHM-uDjt8NUQLWTv7-GNJXYgOaGVnd0b8gVFgbkENnGqs9trcEKC5Re2to/s320/Charles_Dickens_s1_1_cd.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5706513047798026722" />
Born 200 years ago upon this date of February 7th, 1812, Charles John Huffam Dickens, was birthed to John & Elizabeth Dickens, his destiny to be the second in a row of eight children. He passed away on June 9th, 1870, mourned by many.

Mr. Dickens was an exceedingly influential writer of the 1800s, affecting everything from TV to our speech patterns (ie,What the Dickens! lol). I didn't begin reading his literature until I was in high school & I have admittedly not read as many of his works as I should have. I am in the process of slowly, but surely devouring his Posthumous Papers of the Pickwick Club, an interesting array of tales that amuse with the satirical irony that seems to envelope much of the plot.

In honor of his birthday I have decided to do an Unscramble Game (Miss Laurie of Old-Fashioned Charm was the inspiration with her Unscramble Games of late). It will consist of characters from his books & book titles. The number of letters in each set denotes the amount in the answer.

Points: 5 points for every correct answer & an additional 2 points for every character you can name which book they are from.

Charles Dickens Unscramble Game:

Female Characters:

1. They were married only 4 days after the attack on Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. I am certain that their marriage was happy yet somewhat sad occasion with such a national tragedy. They had loving marriage, filled with seven children, two of which unfortunately died before the age of two. My Grandma went on to be with Lord nearly 20 years ago, from kidney failure. We all miss her dearly, my Grandpa especially. We will be spending the anniversary with him so that the loneliness is not so difficult to bear. I can only say, please cherish your loved ones while they are here & never lose a chance to tell them how much you care.

God bless,
Sarah GraceSarah Gracehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11528995017267283342noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2921676772518772918.post-60306740804221634122011-12-07T17:25:00.000-08:002011-12-07T17:47:10.010-08:00Remembering Pearl Harbor<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 252px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhzM3_dxNxvV-w0PL-GqIJyEqAp40AJIa2UzbVNWF5Yvp-D0xz_wCBTdEeDPhwtsn_fGh58fv-RHqSOpnkn-DtGGbWdpEVM4PPz-9uFrHb9wUtAs5Za6WUYgRUyJw_W11kOcbpT00LGEkE/s320/First+bomb+dropped+from+the+Japanese+planes+during+the+Pearl+Harbor+attack.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5683567399152014706" />

It was 70 years ago on this very day in December that the infamous attack on Pearl Harbor in Hawaii was perpetrated, mercilessly taking the lives of 2,390 Americans. The onslaught was the final straw that broke the camel's back & made it a certainty of our involvement in World War II. My own grandfather may have been there, if it had not been for a car accident that prevented his entering the service. We must always remember those who sacrifice their lives for our freedom.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 268px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi31X7hmeXfW4Qge447ucINp1La2s99zMuaeg2StQViNIjbw6k8nM_zOoNEdtDBHPE9lgwK4sYZlYLPcQ2DRGQ4O9wVS-jg_U1d1N331COpCEdx2L1zihAfaTv8g1cljo03AR_GEncef5s/s320/Rescuing+survivors+the+USS+West+Virginia+during+the+Pearl+Harbor+attack.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5683567166152312434" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 210px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgNi_oZQPeYSV0JOJ0Zj9MXvwOu75kD8hICv0d9vP2OcqoCuBoh99gFeU_J_aHNUGPjx8BnPGXAmb76ZNzK6UOZEDp9VIqSsfMBia83kEJ_dtWwh4vNG0ciSLQ11Tf1UpVlghjpD6vbDM4/s320/American+destroyer+USS+Shaw+exploding+after+the+Pearl+Harbor+attack.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5683566540772768114" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 254px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhVbp9nYBwXFabkmDIoE44arhjm9fAhsKeTU9VkCpig1zPtIVGMn69Vv3j28N1k9zEtXaKDX9QTrmx3IBtmmUVOBtTGGLN9OZ_0o5jEjH4ZnqMJVwuhqgOax8T0tbO_Ew3d-5REm0EspHM/s320/Women+attempting+to+put+out+the+fire+after+the+Pearl+Harbor+attack.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5683565552974228226" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 242px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjWgOeJqQHYwyZ3si7cXyaQtCgwj_8wC323-Ad3_OoN-1QG0gj2NmsMotAAM7D7NzG4bam_BsKFr3sIGva6CY7x7_gi4Kp7XD-MkqHcfQUen54q-OzsvoDdQD6GlToHCb9SlVYBkBCgSC4/s320/Sinking+ships+after+the+Pearl+Harbor+attack.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5683565391489449826" />

God bless,
Sarah GraceSarah Gracehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11528995017267283342noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2921676772518772918.post-21501249840260340272011-11-24T19:36:00.000-08:002011-11-24T20:26:47.722-08:00A Happy Thanksgiving & A Receipt<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 250px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhfWNASvXxzg8qkC7j762IrK8plfBTWzVsgZKVWOoSERpP4O3u-B4uq8AMEc_nc-c1EiVOnzO5UWfIicCqz2pe8Dr193y1-NA2G3LhJCBCE418bzln6EnbgJNYMVQwBPBW_Wcu6aEmREmE/s320/rockwell_thanksgiving.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5678784915724328402" />
Happy Thanksgiving to everyone!
I hope that each & every one of you has had a memorable & pleasing day. Thanksgiving happens to be one of my favorite holidays of the year, what with the transitioning of the seasons & colors of God's wondrous creation.

My family & I enjoyed a lovely day for a gathering of the clan, albeit somewhat small of a gathering. We dined on the usually thought of fare: turkey, stuffing, sweet potatoes, mashed potatoes, green beans, & cranberry jelly. My grandfather & brother do not like turkey, so we have a dish of shredded beef, as well.

As of July, I began changing my eating habits towards a vegetarian way of dining. I have since been experimenting with many different receipts from varied cultures. In the process I began creating receipts that were inspired by something I had read or simply because a combination of certain ingredients seemed appealing.

I received a book from the interlibrary loan a few weeks ago called Veganomicon that contained a receipt for Sloppy Joes made from lentils. I was unable to remember what exactly went into said Sloppy Joes, so I used what my mother calls my great-grandmother's French cooking influence & winged it.

Below is my receipt for the Lentil Sloppy Joes, which by the by, are equally delicious over rice or mashed potatoes, as on a bun or slice of bread.

Lentil Sloppy Joes
3 cups brown lentils
4 cups water (for boiling lentils)

Sauce:
2 1/2 cups tomato sauce
1/2 cup water
1/4 cup ketchup
2 1/2 tbsp brown sugar
1/4 to 1/2 cup raisins (depending on how you like raisins)
2 1/2 tsp garlic powder
2 pinches mustard powder
2 pinches ginger powder
1 tbsp blackstrap molasses

The lentils are boiled covered for about 25-35 minutes, depending upon the age of the lentils. Most of the water is boiled off by the time that the lentils are tender with just a slight chew to them.
In a separate pot, simmer the tomato sauce, water, & ketchup for a couple minutes, stirring so that it doesn't burn. Then begin adding the rest of the ingredients. After the lentils are done, pour them into the sauce, stirring in lentils. Let everything simmer for a couple more minutes, then serve on as a sandwich or over rice, mashed potatoes, or as a side. Whatever you choose, it is a comforting dish.

God bless,
Sarah GraceSarah Gracehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11528995017267283342noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2921676772518772918.post-33817222842852668202011-10-31T13:18:00.000-07:002011-10-31T13:46:34.604-07:00Halloween....Not So Harmless<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjtXDWi87V938OtD5bVGNybT661Jx6gVuvDvOeOc-PtNKhVQ1k807lx4zLTVS3KoF3MaQPBZSIFZrYraPH0WtOgPj55sNsdqVlxNTXw0ns7323F1Ro2yIhb6zLWTz8enx7PAikoGq6uqF8/s320/Autumn-Light-Canada.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5669760239359791458" />
I was raised to believe that Halloween was a day that glorified Satan, witchcraft, & sorcery. But as I have been gaining in years I see more & more people, even Christian, who allow their children to parade about in costumes of witches, wizards, demons, ghoul, ghosts, etc. saying it is only a fun diversion for the children & they will feel left out if they can not take part with their friends.
Halloween has been commercialized to make it feel like just another harmless holiday, but why should children be allowed to participate in a day that gives Satan & his evil spirits honor?
Why must parents be asleep to the truth of what they are really allowing their children to do?
Most parents would be appalled if their child wanted to smoke, drink, use drugs, or have intimacy before marriage because they are doing things that are harmful to their bodies.
Some of those same parents allow trick or treating on Halloween. Why should the parents care any less about their child's soul? I think people need to take a step back & reevaluate their decisions concerning Halloween.

Take today & celebrate Jesus Christ the giver of life, not Satan. My family calls today Hallelujah day & we use today to pray for others & against Satan & his demons.

Have a God blessed Hallelujah day,
Sarah GraceSarah Gracehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11528995017267283342noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2921676772518772918.post-69047685177228348252011-10-22T12:24:00.000-07:002011-10-22T12:48:15.097-07:00He Is Always NearSometimes when everything around me seems to be falling apart at the seams, I tend to forget that I have a friend who will help me to repair those seams & put the pieces back together or just plain start anew.
When the day is long & I am worn through, my friend will be there to uplift me & give me strength to continue. My friend will stick by me closer than a brother ever could.
Who is this friend?
My loving Redeemer, Savior, & Friend, Jesus Christ. He will always be near my side through thick & through thin, for He said, I will never leave thee nor forsake thee. I know that my Lord never will lie & that His Word is true. So when I need a shoulder to lean on, He is always near.
My Mother loves the poem Footprints in the Sand, which I think is very true.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 224px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhXVsHh8VOlYN4XFFDfiM-SRDkQZsayFVP_yjhHXSiFU52C32DVo5oV16eKA2gSOdkwZoqMQ_u7M36IeZeoR3voSODBfcGMcSd7GXa-PwWxGq5o-en826N_rMafjTaDoifVyCrLypihzCY/s320/Footprints-in-the-Sand.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5666404681150382562" />

God bless & have wonderful weekend,
Sarah GraceSarah Gracehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11528995017267283342noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2921676772518772918.post-53453188825701808112011-10-08T10:30:00.000-07:002011-10-08T10:30:01.489-07:00Fall In Love With The 1930'sA few weeks ago I did a post on 1940's styles that would be lovely for autumn & I know that the styles of the 1930's would be lovely for this time of year also. So below I have a few photos of the fall/winter styles that I think would be wonderful to recreate.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 238px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhgByFLyl06b4Jk3JWdjJDgioQdJHKIk42-klG3ohh3S1qL5GtpUid-kjJ5mOKOmm6X-57S5kQM2t1c-wUPdkEpMDr0ZxpchIZ9o8vJjxOHl-yXXPHoOlPQ5G2op_WhwSi6GQzBhTDcNNE/s320/1930s+frock+%2526+coat.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5660051530564407554" />
A simple, yet lovely frock with an equally lovely coat. Very nice if made up in a tropical weight wool for the frock & a medium or coat weight for the coat. The frock would be nice made in a silk for a special occasion gown, just lengthen the hem to floor-length.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 214px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiK0CGfBLWkx-zFSrPI6_yLeecnP1LTqzZSstmppS7sBjuIOAAhjQTqmCer_IVmK5dLgCmP143j8wk4OM9heVd3QsQ3SmY5k-O2_SvA3XqyjP4MdvNuGtjZp2OD_vdkkox8h7AS6Fo2TZY/s320/spring1934woolfabric.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5660050989306156402" />
This photo is from a catalog, showcasing some of their wool fabrics for winter. The colors are wonderful. It helps to understand what colors were considered fashionable at that time (not to mention that the two coats shown are simply elegant).

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 258px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjXCMu33swuVaFGx5dgew036sos1qV0um8kZbcfV02ieAD3Nm1N2BG4vFg3jO8ph__PiMmGtNlqfQCRDYafuzTO4Pp8Cq9MjPtlbfNPMUfzF7J8Pq5YjijiAsHKGq9zpZtTX1ge9sy7eZI/s320/bff0_10.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5660050777735457938" />
This frock would be a great fall/winter or even spring/summer piece, depending upon what fabric was chosen. The neckline is something I think would be very flattering & would draw the attention upwards to the face. A great addition to the wardrobe.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 196px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhsBpkQSJXnWA5-8cqQiNruzMUa1XBKp8RsozlYALDhJkuWwmDTMq3UqWkTX9-d-LMVesZp8_I-r8E_IEIraYwmqcgYNkxzWCdYNOZW00b-p6Wpymai0i-gr3-KrppDqfH9w49XYDzTFMA/s320/1935+dress2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5660049928280671490" />
Another frock that would be a great staple in the wardrobe, perhaps the new Little Black Dress. If you were to add different accessories it could be made to look like an entirely different frock.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 174px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgiXdpALvRq8Zt1_NOJ9afuOGzcpfI12iSnnirRJm4pynP3lBc4YXdCLC3CU3-fpgf95Jc9iqGq4lKtC7ejXln-N2Y1mSI4LwYQvGWc7klnxDG-PxncEgQG2eZnSCN3Fgj1EMiJh96uki4/s320/1934+swagger+coat.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5660048773320200018" />
This coat is called the Swagger coat. The brown fur collar & matching muff are eyecatching.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 217px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgwR66spQ4VTM_pBXJISHQarC6RrOpNDs5iihzZPfm7yi3Be3H9z_ix8fYrGHGbTSTrzF4FUQl2kS2e7QaHiKOjUY8eRfwLnjOZmkQE1CNQk4G0oBsHcDfo_kB04E1Qa9aNF1esSiJOFOU/s320/30spants.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5660045669671908914" />
A nautical inspired lounge or beach wear ensemble that would be great for the lady who wears slacks. With the double-breasted buttons on the blue it reflects military styling, but also is slimming. Worn with warm leggings, it could be an attractive fall frock.

I hope everyone has a lovely weekend & enjoys the changing of the seasons.
God bless,
Sarah GraceSarah Gracehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11528995017267283342noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2921676772518772918.post-72451112789779981142011-09-22T14:39:00.000-07:002011-09-22T15:40:10.142-07:00Fall Fashion Ala The 1940sI think it is always interesting to look at the clothing that was worn in different periods for the changing seasons, so this post is a compilation of a few of the 1940s autumnal fashions.

Myrna Loy, who happens to be one of my favorite female actresses from the Golden Era (1930s-1940s), is wearing a lovely suit ensemble with an adorable chapeau.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 245px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj4jtqOR5sKxqlse0NSf6bacM0Qhyphenhyphene42iaM9n-8ablzqDnh2gyOeu-DSEL4pC6Jvl0vDwHH1zpHwdJcO2pd-dD5WqWPOxgJBBmwHkf9C47XpRg33scANXVM5vdePn8NA_bD2vgJoH0i9do/s320/myrna+loy+found+on+sensibility+vintage+images+section.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5655310230840316450" />
This Simplicity pattern is a fine example of the lounging suit, perfect for the cold evenings when all you want to do is curl up with a captivating book & a cup of steaming hot tea.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 222px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj2ZaR-fn4so90dnRYhVlFIQke8N70iOhz6WYyEjJlG3HWWUq7XRf34rzNrcJJ8FlGKAvpfpvIFPuGKQQkgBP-_W5SOCZDQb_i9wIZfiyTmVew741V4R8W2tM9dGrWBdRWgIciFtThdK0w/s320/wpt40s28035simpl3949.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5655306034480757410" />

The title says it all, accessorization is key to making a small wardrobe seem endless.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 228px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgVvsYdeKFovtnU8qt5_MgO6IY16CkX61PfXNC0Jsg9CWrLsW_WUob6q5KAmzNWubVZG4Z2Am0r3Y_mctt81QDk_oKUA3HvUcyTg8MHlskRoQrXEoghSUJVRnfq1T3QsWDa4O-Pog2_ank/s320/ladies-dresses.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5655305994637226642" />

A photo I found online taken of a young woman entering her freshman year at university. A friend emailed me the below story & I think it is very touching. I would also like to apologize for the lack of photos of any sort, as my computer will not allow me to load them at present.

Sack Lunches

I put my carry-on in the luggage compartment and sat down in my assigned

seat. It was going to be a long flight. 'I'm glad I have a good book to read. Perhaps I will

get a short nap,' I thought.

Just before take-off, a line of soldiers came down the aisle and filled all the vacant seats,

totally surrounding me. I decided to start a conversation.

'Where are you headed?' I asked the soldier seated nearest to me. 'Petawawa.

We'll be there for two weeks for special training, and then we're being deployed to Afghanistan.

After flying for about an hour, an announcement was made that sack lunches were available for

five dollars. It would be several hours before we reached the east, and I quickly decided a lunch

would help pass the time...

As I reached for my wallet, I overheard a soldier ask his buddy if he planned to buy lunch.

‘No, that seems like a lot of money for just a sack lunch. Probably wouldn't be worth five bucks.

I'll wait till we get to base.

His friend agreed.

I looked around at the other soldiers. None were buying lunch.

I walked to the back of the plane and handed the flight attendant a fifty dollar bill. 'Take a lunch to all

those soldiers.'

She grabbed my arms and squeezed tightly. Her eyes wet with tears, she thanked me. 'My son was a

soldier in Iraq ; it's almost like you are doing it for him.'

Picking up ten sacks, she headed up the aisle to where the soldiers were seated. She stopped at my

seat and asked, 'Which do you like best - beef or chicken?' 'Chicken,' I replied, wondering why she

asked. She turned and went to the front of plane, returning a minute later with a dinner plate from first

class.

'This is your thanks.'

After we finished eating, I went again to the back of the plane, heading for the rest room. A man

stopped me. 'I saw what you did. I want to be part of it. Here, take this.' He handed me twenty-five

dollars. Soon after I returned to my seat, I saw the Flight Captain coming down the aisle, looking at

the aisle numbers as he walked, I hoped he was not looking for me, but noticed he was looking at the

numbers only on my side of the plane. When he got to my row he stopped, smiled, held out his hand

and said, 'I want to shake your hand.' Quickly unfastening my seatbelt I stood and took the

Captain's hand. With a booming voice he said, 'I was a soldier and I was a military pilot. Once,

someone bought me a lunch.

It was an act of kindness I never forgot.' I was embarrassed when applause was heard from all of the

passengers.

Later I walked to the front of the plane so I could stretch my legs. A man who was seated about six

rows in front of me reached out his hand, wanting to shake mine. He left another twenty-five dollars in

my palm.

When we landed I gathered my belongings and started to deplane.

Waiting just inside the airplane door was a man who stopped me, put something

in my shirt pocket, turned, and walked away without saying a word. Another

twenty-five dollars!

Upon entering the terminal, I saw the soldiers gathering for their trip to the base.

I walked over to them and handed them seventy-five dollars.

It will take you some time to reach the base.

It will be about time for a sandwich.

God Bless You.'

Ten young men left that flight feeling the love and respect of their fellow travelers.

As I walked briskly to my car, I whispered a prayer for their safe return. These

soldiers were giving their all for our country. I could only give them a couple of

meals. It seemed so little...

A veteran is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made

payable to 'The United States of America ' for an amount of 'up to and

including my life.'

That is Honor, and there are way too many people in this country who no longer understand it.'

Psalm 23:1-6: The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.
He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.
He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake.
Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.
Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.

Have a blessed week,
Sarah GraceSarah Gracehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11528995017267283342noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2921676772518772918.post-39252774776574849162011-07-30T08:52:00.000-07:002011-07-30T09:05:57.550-07:00Happy Belated Birthday Beatrix!<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 256px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgCUEb3A6zLWP9vzIgyllKAilCMt5iPK90wmgIeX8a_ZoYzfuvBcfXFzkSGf1wwoMVlsURiJU7Ka1AVmPMYwW7GMs0kkBmdvCS4BE-KLA289SPHhpEPs-6HDKb7rkNGg7pPRWyAyVzxyhs/s320/beatrix+potter.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5635177209288450930" />

On Thursday, July 28th, 1866 Helen Beatrix Potter Heelis was born. It is hard to believe that it has been 145 years since my eternally favourite authoress/ illustrator was born. With her imagination for such loveable & memorable characters & her breathtakingly beautiful illustrations, it is hard not to get lost in the world of Peter Rabbit, Benjamin Bunny, or Jemima Puddleduck. Her tales draw the reader into a time long since past, with such animation of idea, that one becomes a part in her world. I long to be even half as accomplished as Beatrix in the arts of pen & drawing. Happy 145th Birthday Beatrix, may your tales continue to be beloved by the generations to come.

God bless,
Sarah GraceSarah Gracehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11528995017267283342noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2921676772518772918.post-38376784170665804212011-07-21T11:12:00.000-07:002011-07-21T11:47:49.985-07:00Elegant Lady's Closet GiveawayOver at the Royal Daughters of the King blog, they are having a giveaway for Sense & Sensibility's Elegant Lady's Closet ePattern.
